A sharp and chilly 7am start for a couple of hours birding with Jono Forgham to Therfield in search of the regularly seen but elusive Great Grey Shrike.
We started from the car park and saw a Kestrel and close flyover Buzzard before making it to the main Icknield Way path and the area around Greys Farm where reports of our target bird had been seen.
We scoured the hedgerow tops to no avail though had excellent views of a Red Kite and distant Hen Harrier. Closer were a covey of Grey Partridge and flocks of Linnets.
More common hedgerow birds and Jono spotted a flying Brambling but too quick for me to get a positive ID or photo.
Eventually, a few Great Tits took off in a scared fashion and low and behold at the top of a tree adjacent to the hedge sat our Great Grey Shrike! We managed a couple of poor record shots before it flew across to some power lines nearby.
The light was poor but we managed to get a couple of half decent images.
We walked back to the car and had a very restorative coffee at the Silver Bull.
An excellent couple of hours before work!
